„Rheumatism, that only something for old people? You can get that as a child?“ Rheumatism and children - thats still unthinkable for most people. Furthermore, there are over 30.000 children und adolescents in Germany suffering from different forms of rheumatism. Most of the young rheumatics - approximately 15.000 - are affected by the special juvenile degenerative joint disease, which involves pain and limited mobility. Thereby there can one or even more joints be affected. Also the disease can develop into internal organs or affect the isis of the eyes, which as a last resort can end up going blind. Rarely some forms of rheumatism can lead to death. Causes for arthritis are wide ranging and usually so far unsolved.
The photographic body in hand displays the life of young rheumatics and broaches the different aspects coming along with this disease. In order to visualize the theme, a wide range of different age protagonist at home, in special hospitals and support groups, from infant to adolescent have been followed over a longer period of time. In the meantime the photographer appears as a silent observer who tries to catch the emotions which the parties concerned are feeling connected to the handling with their condition. The present hurdles and handicaps, the pain but as well including the beautiful moments appearing in existence with the disease are photographically visualized in a sensitive and atmospheric way.
The project aims to enhance the relevance of the topic, to promote solidarity with parties concerned plus to support a early recognition. Meanwhile the photographic concept distances itself beyond classical stereotypes and rather conveys in an essayistic storytelling, knowledge which comprises important information about limited known circumstances.
